Practical guide to WakePhase
Everything you need to know to use WakePhase well, step by step.
1.The idea in 30 seconds
You choose the time you want to be woken up, then a wake-up mode.
When you go to sleep, you tap SLEEP©. WakePhase then calculates your optimal wake-up time, at the end of a sleep cycle, when sleep is light.
If you get up during the night, tap SLEEP© again when you go back to bed: each SLEEP© redoes the calculation from that moment. The more you get up at night, the better you wake up in the morning.
2.A night, step by step
- Open WakePhase and tap GET STARTED.
- Choose NIGHT.
- Set the chosen time, the latest time you want to be woken up (in ZEN mode).
- Choose a mode: ZEN, EPICURE or INTENSE.
- Tap SLEEP© when you go to bed. The OPTIMAL TIME screen shows your wake-up time.
- During the night, after each waking, tap SLEEP© when you go back to bed, in the app or right on the lock screen.
3.How the time is calculated
A sleep cycle lasts about 90 minutes. WakePhase counts whole cycles from your last SLEEP©, then adds 20 minutes: the time to fall asleep and reach the end of a cycle, just before deep sleep.
Deep sleep falls roughly between the 25th and the 75th minute of a cycle. WakePhase always avoids ringing in that zone.
That is why the wake-up time is sometimes a little earlier than your chosen time: better to get up gently a bit earlier than later in the middle of deep sleep.
4.Wake-up modes
ZEN: so you are never late. The alarm never goes past your chosen time. If the only possible wake-up falls in deep sleep, WakePhase warns you and calculates a better moment.
EPICURE: to enjoy a little longer. You choose a maximum (+15, +20, +25 or +30 minutes after your chosen time) and WakePhase looks for the last light-sleep moment in that window. It may sometimes seem short, because the app will always try to spare you a harsh wake-up.
INTENSE: to feel fully rested. You wake up at least one hour after the ZEN time, always in light sleep.
5.NAP mode
Choose NAP, then FLASH or FULL CYCLE, and tap SLEEP©. No time to choose.
FLASH: wake up 20 minutes after SLEEP©, before deep sleep.
FULL CYCLE: wake up at the end of a full cycle.
6.REPETITION
In ZEN mode, the REPETITION button keeps the same chosen time for the following days: NONE (tonight only), NUMBER OF ALARMS (1 to 7, the first one being tonight's), WEEK (5) or WEEKEND (2).
Each evening, tap SLEEP© when you go to bed: WakePhase calculates your optimal time as usual. Without SLEEP©, the alarm simply rings at your chosen time.
To stop, use “STOP REPEATING” in the notification.
7.The alarm
The alarm rings only once, for 5 minutes, then stops. It does not repeat: a second ring could fall in deep sleep.
The default sound is the WakePhase sound. You can pick another one with the ALARM SOUND button.
8.MY CYCLE: WakePhase learns your cycle
If you wake up naturally before the alarm, tap MY CYCLE and answer YES to “Did you wake up naturally?”. WakePhase measures how long you slept since your last SLEEP©.
After 5 natural wake-ups, the calculation uses the length of your own cycle instead of a 90-minute average. Naps of at least one hour count too.
MY CYCLE ends the night and removes the alarm.
9.The buttons of the OPTIMAL TIME screen
CHANGE MODE: pick another mode during the night, then SLEEP©.
CHANGE TIME: pick another time, then SLEEP©.
CANCEL: stop the SLEEP© calculation. The alarm is removed and WakePhase closes.
QUIT: close WakePhase. The alarm stays set.
10.SLEEP© on the lock screen
No need to open the app at night: the SLEEP© button also appears on the lock screen, with your optimal time.
Android: in the WakePhase notification. Allow notifications, exact alarms and showing on the lock screen when WakePhase asks.
iPhone: in the WakePhase card on the lock screen. Do not swipe WakePhase away from the app switcher during the night: the app must stay open in the background to stop the alarm after 5 minutes.
11.Good to know
- WakePhase is not a smart alarm app and uses no measurement from sensors, the microphone or any other device connected to your phone.
- You yourself are the only source of data, through SLEEP©, that determines an optimal wake-up time.
- Tap SLEEP© every evening before bed and each time you go back to bed. Without SLEEP©, WakePhase cannot calculate your optimal time.
- WakePhase assumes you fall back asleep almost right after going back to bed. That is the app's starting observation. So keep tapping SLEEP© as long as sleep does not come.
- No account, no ads, no data sent: everything stays on your phone.
